Registration is now open for the 2013 Junior Challenge Wheelchair Basketball Festival. The festival will take place from Nov 9 to 10 and is open to everyone between 8 and 24 years old, plus those between 24 and 30 with less than two years of experience.

It may have been a rainy Sunday afternoon outside, but the children with disabilities and their siblings, family and support workers lit up the Mount Pleasant Community Center with their enthusiasm. Kids between age 3 and 12 had a chance to try a variety of wheelchair sports, including boccia, tag, floor hockey, relay races and much more. Parents and siblings even hopped in their chairs to join in the fun.

Kamloops, BC – Kamloops Adapted Sports Association (KASA) is thrilled to announce its official launch, Saturday October 5th 6-8:30pm on court at the Tournament Capital Centre (TCC) in Kamloops. KASA will be showcasing its three sport offerings: wheelchair basketball, wheelchair tennis and handcycling. Joining KASA that evening will be BC Wheelchair Sports, BC Wheelchair Basketball and Adapted Sports Sun Peaks. All together, seven different adapted sports will be showcased.

Our athletes hit the 'big leagues' this weekend when they promoted wheelchair basketball at the NBA Big Tour event in Metrotown in Burnaby. The NBA Big Tour is a free interactive basketball festival that travels across Canada and offers basketball demos by NBA players, autograph sessions, fun games and prizes.

Kids with physical disabilities, their families, and their able-bodied siblings and friends are invited to several fun Sunday Let's Play Days. Let's Play is a program that provides kids with disabilities with sports wheelchairs and works with families and schools to help children experience the fun and fitness of physical activity. Even if your child does not use a wheelchair, he or she can still benefit from the freedom of mobility that a sports wheelchair can bring.

If you play wheelchair basketball, you know that many participants are able-bodied or have minimal disabilities that allow them to walk. In fact, 40% of Canadian wheelchair basketball players are able-bodied or minimally disabled. To spread this message, BC Wheelchair Basketball Society teamed up with BC Wheelchair Sports Association and the Bridging the Gap Program to create this fun video. You might even recognize a few of the athletes.

If you're interested in learning about refereeing wheelchair basketball, or if you're a student looking for volunteer hours, come out to the BC Wheelchair Basketball Referee Clinic. The clinic is open to anyone over 16 who is interested in becoming a referee. Experience playing basketball and/or refereeing basketball is an asset, but is not required.

The City of Surrey and BC Wheelchair Basketball Society will be launching a new junior wheelchair basketball program at the Cloverdale Recreation Centre this Fall. The program is open to kids aged 8 - 18 years old of all experience levels and abilities and will run from on Tuesdays from October 1st to November 19th. Participants will learn the basics of wheelchair basketball through fun games and drills.

If you've ever wanted to try the fast-paced, hard-hitting sport of sledge hockey, now's your chance! The City of Surrey will be hosting a free sledge hockey introductory event on Saturday, Sept. 14th at the Surrey Sport & Leisure Complex. All sleds and sticks will be provided. There will be a limited number of gloves and helmets, so bring your own if you have them.

Whatever your age, disability or experience level, here's a great opportunity to play wheelchair basketball this Fall. The Port Moody Recreation Center and BCWBS will be offering a joint wheelchair basketball program at the Port Moody Rec Center starting September 16th. This program will take the place of the Tim Frick City League, which is currently looking for a new home for the Fall season.

(June 18, 2013 - OTTAWA, ONT.) - Wheelchair Basketball Canada has released the list of top under-23 wheelchair basketball players attending Team Canada’s selection camp in Toronto June 24-30, 2013. The selected players will form the Canadian Men’s U23 National Team for the Junior World Championship taking place September 5-15, 2013 in Adana, Turkey.

The Regional Coach will be responsible for the planning, implementation, coaching and evaluation of regional level athlete, coach and official development initiatives.

The 5th Annual Wheelchair basketball Jam in Kelowna was a big success again. Participants came from Seattle, Spokane, Calgary, Vancouver, Chilliwack, Kamloops, Vernon and Kelowna. Every participant was schedule to play every game, rotating through different team members. Some of the junior members learned veteran tricks from the likes of Richard Peters, Bryan Shore and Marni Abbott-Peter.

(May 13, 2013 - TORONTO, ONT.) - Wheelchair basketball was in the spotlight at the Canadian Paralympic Committee’s (CPC) 2013 Hall of Fame and Sport Awards Ceremony Friday May 10th at the Mattamy Athletic Centre. Hot on the heels of their London 2012 gold medal performance, the Canadian Men’s Wheelchair Basketball Team took home honours for Best Team Performance, while star player Patrick Anderson (Fergus, Ont.) was named Best Male Athlete, and head coach Jerry Tonello (Toronto, Ont.), who led the team to spotless 8-0 record, received the Tim Frick Paralympic Coach Excellence Award; on the same night that former Women’s National Team head coach Tim Frick (Pender Island, B.C.) and three-time Paralympic gold medallist Jennifer Krempien (Richmond, B.C., original from St. Albert, Alta.) were inducted into the Canadian Paralympic Committee Hall of Fame.

I urge you to get outside and play some tennis, go swimming, do some hand cycling over the summer, but there are some drills that you can do in order to keep the feel for the game. These will not take long, and can be done in the morning, at night, or even just on weekends. If you can take just a few minutes to do these drills, then you will be ahead of the curve come the start of next season when so many other players are rusty and inconsistent.

Thank you to all the participants, coaches, referees, sponsors, partners, and volunteers who helped to make the 20th Annual Hoopfest such a success. The event raised appx. $6000 to support wheelchair basketball programs around the province.
