Janet McLachlan Becomes First Paralympian To Be A Finalist for the Sport BC Senior Female Athlete of the Year

January 21, 2015

(Vancouver, BC) – Janet McLachlan (West Vancouver, BC) has become the first Paralympian to be a finalist for the Sport BC Athlete of the Year awards in the Senior Female Athlete category. McLachlan earned the honour for leading the Canadian women’s wheelchair basketball to team to gold on home soil at the 2014 World Wheelchair Basketball Championships.

“As a Paralympic athlete, it is a tremendous honour to be nominated for this award,” McLachlan said. “Thank you to Sport BC for recognizing that Paralympic and Olympic athletes are equal in their dedication, skill and performance.”

Before she sustained a career-ending knee injury, McLachlan was a high-ranking basketball and rugby player. She won two national championships with the University of Victoria Vikes and represented Canada at the 2001 Beijing Student Games. In 2006, McLachlan tried wheelchair basketball and fell in love with the sport. She made the national team in 2008 and has quickly risen to become one of the world’s best female athletes.

This August, McLachlan played a commanding role in the fifth-ranked Canadian women’s national team gold-medal performance at the 2014 World Wheelchair Basketball Championships in Toronto. She not only did she score a double-double in every game and lead the tournament in rebounds, but she also scored the game-winning shot in the semi-finals against the number-one-ranked Dutch team with just 0.9 seconds on the clock. For her efforts, she was named to the All Star team.

“Janet McLachlan is a truly gifted athlete and an excellent teammate,” said BC Wheelchair Basketball Society Executive Director Sian Blyth. “We are lucky to have such a strong role model for female wheelchair basketball here in BC.”

The Sport BC Athlete of the Year Awards will take place on March 12th.
