BCWBS Northern Tour Report

June 25, 2012

This spring, from mid-March to early May, Northern Program Coach Avril Harris and Program Coordinator Nancy Harris visited seven different cities in northern region. They have reached about 2900 students and facilitators through the tour!!

The Cities Visited:
McBride
Prince George
Ft. St. John
Quesnel
Williams Lake
100 Mile House
Lac La hache

Coach Avril had a small presentation for each school session on disability, wheelchair basketball, inclusive physical activities and Canada Games. He also provided opportunities for the participants to try out the wheelchairs, learn basic chair skills and play the games of wheelchair basketball. Community events included some wheelchair basketball games between celebrities in each community!

Most of these communities are interested in having a wheelchair basketball division in their school leagues in the fall and some groups/organizations showed a great interest in organizing these teams. Three Let's Play kids were also identified and the Let's Play chairs were assigned to them during this trip!

Avril and Nancy did several media interviews and have had excellent coverage for the whole tour.

This program is made possible through financial contributions from the Canadian Paralympic Committee, Sport Canada, BC Wheelchair Basketball Society, and the Rick Hansen Institute."

Most importantly, hundreds of miles trip brought a great awareness and huge smiles everywhere in northern region.
